A sense of discovery is a key theme in the third ECM recital of sisters Natascia and Raffaella Gazzana. Alongside a landscape of French music for violin and piano, drawing on a multiplicity of inspirations, the album includes a premiere recording of Gyorgy Ligetis 1946 Duo (dedicated to Gyorgy Kurtag, and influenced by Hungarian and Rumanian folk music). Duo Gazzana plays Cesar Francks epic A major Sonata of 1886, and Maurice Ravels Sonate posthume, written in 1897, when its author was just 22, and the album concludes with Olivier Messiaens Theme et variations of 1932, a work which in some aspects prefigures the Quatuor pour la fin du temps. The duos performances were recorded at Luganos Auditorio Stelio Molo RSI in March 2017 and produced by Manfred Eicher.

Part: The Symphonies

All four of Arvo Parts symphonies, newly recorded with the NFM Wroclaw Philharmonic under the direction of one of Parts most trusted colleagues, Tonu Kaljuste. Each of the symphonies, as the great Estonian composer has noted, is a world unto itself. Heard in chronological order they also tell us much about Parts musical and spiritual journey, and the very different ways in which he has exercised his craft. Forty-five years separate his Symphony No. 1 (Polyphonic) written in 1963 while he was still a student of Heino Eller, from his Symphony No. 4 (Los Angeles) written in 2008, by which time he was the worlds most widely-performed contemporary composer.

Ecm New Series - Maderna & Berio: Now, And Then
Maderna & Berio: Now, And

Unlike many of his radical new music colleagues, Bruno Maderna (1920-1973) had a great affection for older music, especially that of the Italian Renaissance and Early Baroque eras. But his transcriptions had little to do with the orthodoxy of so-called historically informed interpretation. In the belief that works of art can be removed from their original contexts, he used contemporary instrumental resources to discover new meaning and a new validity in the works of old masters. His transcriptions of Gabrieli, Frescobaldi, Legrenzi and Viadana are vividly conveyed by the RSI Orchestra under Dennis Russell Davies in a program which includes Chemins V by Madernas good friend Luciano Berio (1925-2003). Chemins V is itself a transcription of sorts, a chamber orchestra version of Berios Sequenza XI. Soloist Pablo Marquez references flamenco and the guitars classical heritage, while the orchestra engages with the guitar on levels of expanded harmony. Dialogue develops, as Berio said, through multiple forms of interaction, from the most unanimous to the most conflictual and estranged.

They are widely recognized as the most exciting young string quartet of the present moment, bringing new insights to contemporary composition and core classical repertoire. In parallel, they have also made surprising and impressive forays into the world of Nordic folk music. Their 2014 album Wood Works (Dacapo Records) was a left-field hit, and audiences around the world have been delighted by concert performances of the music. Now the Danish String Quartet bring their folk project to ECM with a stirring new recording. Fästan takes off from an unusual Christmas hymn, Now found is the fairest of roses, published in 1732 by Danish theologian and poet H.A. Brorson. The hymn is set to a mysterious, dark melody: Brorson had chosen an old Lutheran funeral choral to accompany his Christmas hymn, elegantly showing how life and death are always connected. From here we embark on a travel through the rich fauna of Nordic folk melodies until returning to Brorson in the end, say the DSQ. It is a journey that could have been made in many different ways, but we believe that we returned with some nice souvenirs. In these old melodies, we find immense beauty and depth, and we cant help but sing them through the medium of our string quartet. Brorson found the fairest of roses, we found a bunch of...

Ecm New Series - Hieroglyphen Der Nacht
Hieroglyphen Der Nacht

Ecm New Series

Released in time for the great Ukrainian composers 80th birthday on September 30, Hieroglyphen der Nacht features Valentin Silvestrovs music for solo violoncello and for two cellos. German cellist Anja Lechner has had a long association with Silvestrov, first documented on the Grammy-nominated leggiero, pesante in 2001. Lechner plays alone on several pieces and is joined by French cellist Agnès Vestermann, a frequent duo partner, to play the remaining works. Two of the works are dedicated to the performers. As so often with Silvestrov, the compositions often take the form of metaphorical conversations with composers of the past and the present. Tchaikovsky and Schumann are amongst the composers referenced here, while Lacrimosa is a reaction to music of his friend Tigran Mansurian. My own music is a response to and an echo of what already exists, says Silvestrov, viewing his oeuvre as a series of codas to music history. Hieroglyphen der Nacht was recorded at Luganos Auditorio Stelio Molo RSI, and produced by Manfred Eicher.

Ecm New Series - Lukomoriye
Lukomoriye

Ecm New Series

The fourth New Series album from the St Petersburg-based composer Alexander Knaifel may be his most wide-ranging to date, voyaging from the sacred to the secular and back again via several inspired detours. It includes two Prayers to the Holy Spirit, movingly performed by the Lege Artis Choir. Tatiana Melentieva sings Bliss, based on Alexander Pushkins poem, and the great Russian poet is cross-referenced with St Ephraim the Syrian in O Lord of All My Life (A Poem and a Prayer) sung by Piotr Migunov. Oleg Malov, who accompanies both singers, is called upon to internalize texts in four further solo piano pieces. A mad tea party lives up to its title, with a surreal Wonderland spirit. This Child (after the Gospel of St Luke), A Confession and title piece Lukomoriye (both after Pushkin) are luminously quiet, and quietly magical.

Arvo Part: The Deer's Cry

Ecm New Series

The second ECM New Series album to fully showcase pure-toned Estonian vocal group Vox Clamantis is devoted to compositions by their great countryman, Arvo Part whose music has been the most performed globally of any living composer over the past five years. This album titled The Deers Cry after its first track, an incantatory work for a cappella mixed choir is also the latest in an illustrious line of ECM New Series releases to feature Parts compositions, the very music that inspired Manfred Eicher to establish the New Series imprint in 1984. Along with such classic works as Da pacem Domine, the new album includes first-time recordings of the a cappella pieces Drei Hirtenkinder aus Fatima and Habitare Fratres. There is also an a cappella version of Alleluia-Tropus, which Vox Clamantis previously recorded alongside instruments for the acclaimed New Series album Adams Lament. Rarely recorded material makes up nearly half of this new release, including three pieces with instrumental accompaniment: Von Angesicht zu Angesicht, Sei gelobt, du Baum and Veni Creator.

As a young pianist, Andras Schiff earned wide esteem for his 1980s recordings of the major keyboard works of J.S. Bach; in recent years, as part of his long-term relationship with ECM, he has gone back to Bach as a sage veteran, earning more acclaim for his New Series recordings of the Goldberg Variations (2001) and the six Partitas (2007). The New York Times said, Mr. Schiff is, in Bach, a phenomenon. He doesn t so much perform it as emit, breathe it. In August 2011, Schiff turned his focus to the 48 preludes and fugues of The Well-Tempered Clavier, making studio recordings of both books in the Auditorium Radiosvizzera Italiana, Lugano. An iconic inspiration for composers from Mozart and Beethoven to Chopin and Brahms and beyond, The Well-Tempered Clavier has long been considered the Old Testament of the keyboard literature (with Beethovens piano sonatas as the New Testament). In his liner notes to this four-CD set, Paul Griffiths underscores the suitability of Bachs timeless keyboard work for the modern piano: Bach s inquiry into so many nuances, of touch, of interplay between hands and between contrapuntal lines, of character and of expressivity, has helped form keyboard technique as we know it, and his music belongs to the instrument of Beethoven, of Chopin, of Debussy, of Ku...
